Generation No. 1
1. RICHARD1 MANGAN
Notes for RICHARD MANGAN:
Richard was listed as on a headstone receipt payment made by Thomas Mangan in October 1863 with the word father in brackets. This may mean that Richard was Thomas's father or perhaps Thomas is the father.
Child of RICHARD MANGAN is:
2. i. THOMAS
2 MANGAN, b. 1823; d. 23 Jun 1885, 4 Little Longford Street.
Generation No. 2
2. THOMAS2 MANGAN (RICHARD1) was born 1823, and died 23 Jun 1885 in 4 Little Longford Street. He married ELLEN QUINN, daughter of MARY ELIZABETH. She died 1909.
Notes for THOMAS MANGAN:
Thomas a butcher by occupation lived most of his life in and around the Georges Street markets in various tenements. He died of general debility and bronchitis.
Known addresses of Thomas include 14 South William Street ( from Julias death Certificate ),This building on the site of Cookes Cafe was destroyed by fire in 1894 and replaced by Georges Street arcade.
13 Lower Mercer St was the death place of Thomas Junior in 1880.
Following Thomas (Sr.). death in 1885 the family moved back to Lower Mercer Street , this time at number 15.
Notes for ELLEN QUINN:
Ellen became blind latter in life due to Glaucoma. The death certificate of Thomas her husband was not signed but instead bears her mark leading us to believe that she was illiterate as was very common at the time or simply her eye sight had gone.
Children of THOMAS MANGAN and ELLEN QUINN are:
i. RICHARD
3 MANGAN, d. Oct 1863.Notes for RICHARD MANGAN:
This Richard is the same entry as Richard the father of Thomas. It is not known which is the correct entry.

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH MANGAN:
Mary died of consumption at the age of 19. Her occupation on her death certificate is listed as a dressmaker. It is interesting to note her headstone was paid for by a Mary Quinn, who may have been her grand mother or unmarried Aunt.
v. ANNIE MANGAN, b. 1869; d. 06 Jan 1954.
Notes for ANNIE MANGAN:
Annie never married and spent most of her life living with her younger sister Lizzy.
She lied in the attic room of 36 Cabra Road until Mamie moved to Dalkey upon which they moved to a rented flat somewhere else on the Cabra road.
She died of Glaucoma and was noted as being very thin and malnourished.

Generation No. 3
3. LIZZY3 MANGAN (THOMAS2, RICHARD1) was born 1857, and died 1963. She married JOSEPH KENNEDY.
Notes for LIZZY MANGAN:
Lizzy's marriage to a " big shot " Joesph Kennedy from Edenderry was an unhappy union with Lizzy moving back to her mothers with her two children. She supported the children alone by working as a seamstress for the high society on a low wage . Her misery didn't stop there with both children dead within a year of each other at ages of about 20. Joesph was an alcoholic whose drinking establishments were searched out by Lizzy on many a late night.
As discussed about Annie Mangan, Lizzy spent most of her latter life with her sister on Cabra road.
She is the God mother of Mary Elizabeth Baker (nee Bonass)
Children of LIZZY MANGAN and JOSEPH KENNEDY are:

Daisey's death at 21 was put down to pneumonia which she caught when she had teeth pulled out.
ii. ARTHIR KENNEDY, b. 1899; d. 1920.
Notes for ARTHIR KENNEDY:
Arthur died ,a year after his sister, of the Black Flu. The grave diggers in Glasnevin refused to touch his coffin for fear of catching the contagion resulting in his coffin not being buried for a week.
4. JOESPH PATRICK3 MANGAN (THOMAS2, RICHARD1) was born Mar 1876 in Between Pearse St. & Ringsend Dublin, and died 15 Mar 1943 in Cabra Road. He married MARY CATHERINE MCGOWAN 1900, daughter of MCGOWAN and CATHERINE WHITE. She was born 1882, and died 1966.
Notes for JOESPH PATRICK MANGAN:
Joesph worked in advertising for " The Mail " newspaper.
The following was taken from the book "The Advertising Book Of Ireland " page 382.
A genuine advertising canvasser working in the city at the time was Tommy Mangan's farther, Joe who started on the Dublin Evening mail in 1890 and worked on the paper for 53 years, in 1943 he died on the job collapsing with a stroke while out canvassing. In all the 53 years with the mail he received no salary, selling advertising on a commission rate of 6 per Cent . A very conscientious man Joe Mangan would accept no payment for advertising he didn't bring in personally...... Yet despite his commission only earnings Joe Mangan managed to bring up his whole family in reasonable comfort !
This statement was greeted by Peggy (Angela Mangan ) with a comment that nine children would have to fight over the winter jumper begging the question of the writers understanding of Josephs' reasonably comfortable children.
The family home of Joesph and Mamie was a rented property at 36 Cabra Road where Thomas's (???) sisters Annie and Lizzy lived in the attic paying a rent of 4 bob.
Mamie moved to Corrig, Convent Road, Dalkey after Joesph's death when she purchased this house from their son Tommy.
Notes for MARY CATHERINE MCGOWAN:
Mary , known to all as Mamie, was a green eyed 4' 10" character from Manor- Hamilton ( Sligo ?). Famous for her long dresses and at least three underskirts she would conceal her money in the pockets of her lower skirt. This would prove of great embracement to Peggy at mass where a hitch up of the dress would be necessary to pay at the collection.
Peggy, the youngest of her children, recalls her mother appearing to having some form of nervous brakedown on the night before Peggys wedding resulting in Mamie throwing herself in the snow and needing to be carried back into the house.
The next day where Mamie was the organist at the wedding she ignored the night before and played the tune " Just a piece of string " deliberately over and over again.
Mamies musical and acting abilities lead people to believe she might take to the stage with a group of friends she associated with from the Abbey Theatre.
She was renowned for her religious zeal and would warn her daughters against " doing anything wrong in the eyes of God ". When she learnt the landlord of number 36 Cabra road , a Jew, was dying she broke into his room re her Neighbours roof to try to convert him .Her attempts were unsuccessful and he died unconverted .
Children of JOESPH MANGAN and MARY MCGOWAN are:

Kathleen was a milliner like her mother Mamie. She worked with Gabrielle , as her boss in Nestor of Exchequer St a hat shop catering to all the top nobs.
Her fussiness over men amongst other things lead her brother Tommy to comment " thanks be to God somebody asked for her hand we were just about to dust her down"

Kathleen wouldn't stay in England so Eileen ended up staying with the Rooneys with the arrangement eventually becoming permanent.

The Advertising book of Ireland says the following about Tommy " Tommy joined the Irish Press advertising department 10 days after the newspaper began publishing in September 1931.... having the distinction of retiring twice from the Irish press. "
He died of Cancer in St Gabrials Hospital,
Tommy was also famous for his worrying. He called out the coast Guard on night when Mamie Mangan and Michael were only a few minutes late home. They arrived home not long after wondering what all the fuss was about.
